From first-hand experience I have learnt what considerable benefit an external consultant can bring to the smaller business, but am concerned that too few entrepreneurs make use of consultants (other than perhaps their accountants).

Larger organisations virtually all use external consultants, in the form of non executive directors or management consultants, so why should smaller businesses not follow suit? The stumbling block I feel is generally because of the cost implication of using a business consultant and possibly the fear of a consultant being too ‘corporate’. As someone who has a passion for assisting smaller sized businesses, I have taken the approach of charging fees that are more affordable, to help promote the great benefits that I believe I can bring to the table.

Service delivery

My services can be utilised in a variety of ways:

• On a short-term, ‘on demand‘ basis (anything from a single day) to assist with specific issues or a particular project.

• A regular, part-time basis (for example to attend monthly board meetings or to assist with on-going strategic advice).

• As longer-term interim management. This could cover the illness or sudden departure of a key director/manager, or to fill a new strategic role prior to finding a permanent placement.

Fees structure

After an initial free, no obligation consultation meeting, charges are normally around £400 per day (plus travel and out of pocket expenses) for short assignments, reducing to £300 for longer term, interim management work (the precise figure determined by the nature and scale of the work).
